16 inches on center is standard for exterior walls and load-bearing interior walls. 24 inches on center is used for non-load-bearing walls to save lumber.
Q2 How many studs do I need for a 12-foot wall?
A 12-foot wall at 16" on center requires approximately 10 studs. At 24" on center, about 7 studs. Always add extras for corners and openings.
Q3 What length studs should I buy for 8-foot ceilings?
For 8-foot ceilings, use pre-cut 92 5/8 inch studs. The top and bottom plates add the remaining height to reach the finished ceiling.
