Wall framing is built on a regular grid of vertical studs spaced either 16 or 24 inches on center — measured from the center of one stud to the center of the next. The 16-inch spacing is standard for load-bearing exterior walls and most interior walls because it provides solid nailing for drywall at every sheet edge and field without adhesive. The 24-inch spacing saves about 25% on lumber cost and is suitable for non-load-bearing interior partitions, but it requires ½-inch or thicker drywall to avoid flexing and a soft feel underfoot when applied to a floor.
A standard stud wall has three components: a single bottom plate (the horizontal piece on the floor), a doubled top plate (two pieces at the ceiling), and the vertical studs between them. The doubled top plate ties intersecting walls together and transfers load across openings. For standard 8-foot ceilings, pre-cut studs are sold at 92⅝ inches — designed so that a stud plus three plates equals exactly 96 inches (8 feet). Using full 8-foot studs instead means trimming every stud individually, adding significant labor on any project larger than a single small wall.
Every door and window opening requires additional framing beyond the basic stud count: a header spanning the opening, two full-height king studs on each side, two jack studs supporting the header ends, and cripple studs filling above the header to the top plate. This typically adds 4–6 studs per opening. Outside corners require 2–3 extra studs for drywall backing on both walls — the standard technique uses three studs in an L-shape or H-pattern. Interior wall intersections similarly need backing studs. The calculator accounts for these extras when you specify the number of openings, but always add a few studs to your order for blocking, repairs, and the inevitable twisted piece you'll set aside.
