Deck board quantity is calculated from the deck area and the board's effective coverage width — which is the face width plus the gap between boards. Standard 5/4×6 pressure-treated decking is 5.5 inches wide (actual dimension of nominal 6-inch lumber); with a ⅛-inch gap, each board covers 5.625 inches of deck width. The gap is essential for drainage and to allow the wood to expand when wet without buckling the surface. Composite decking manufacturers specify their own required gap — typically ¼ to ⅜ inch — and following it precisely is critical because composites expand far more than wood.
Joist spacing directly affects which board thickness you can use. Standard 5/4 pressure-treated decking (1-inch actual) is adequate for joists at 16 inches on center. For 24-inch joist spacing, use 2-inch nominal (1.5-inch actual) decking or the boards will feel bouncy and soft underfoot. Most composite decking manufacturers require 12-inch joist spacing because composites are stiffer than wood and span shorter distances before deflecting noticeably. Always verify your specific product's joist spacing requirement before framing the deck — retrofitting joists after decking is installed is an expensive and disruptive mistake. Board length selection significantly affects both waste and the finished look. Choose a length that divides evenly into your deck's run dimension, or that allows you to offset end joints by at least 16 inches between adjacent rows. End joints that line up in a straight row look poor and structurally concentrate joint stress in one joist bay. Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized screws — not standard zinc-plated screws, which rust and stain pressure-treated wood within a season or two. Hidden fasteners (Ipe clips, Tiger Claw, or manufacturer-specific clips for composite) produce a cleaner surface and prevent the splitting that occurs when screws are driven near board ends.
